Yet another ransomware attack has targeted government owned facilities in Europe. This time Spain’s healthcare system has been put to the test by unknown hackers. One of Barcelona’s largest hospitals had its central computer system disrupted by the stemware. However, no urgent consequences have been felt, with only 150 non urgent surgeries being cancelled. Additionally 3000 patients were forced to miss their checkup appointments.

About the Attack

The latest attack has mainly affected the computer system responsible for the date registry. The laboratories, emergency room, and pharmacy computer systems were also infected. At this time it is still unknown how the hackers managed to infect they systems. The Hospitals director said that it is still unclear when they systems will be back up and running.

The affects of the attack were reduced due to a backup system in place for such circumstances. Comments were made by the regional governments telecommunications secretary. He hinted that no ransom has yet been made. He also stated that no ransom will ever be paid.

Recovering from the damage

As stated by the hospitals director, staff is working hardly to get the systems back to full operation. Despite that the hospital still functions as expected. The hospitals press department also noted that additional steps will be taken to prevent such attacks in the future.

This newest attack is relatively minor compared to other cyber attacks that took place in recent times. For the last decade, the number of hackers has been exponentially growing. Cyber-crimes are now a daily occurrence, with other similar attack attempts event taking place today in the United States.
